What’s Your Trip?

 

How do you like to ride? Commute? Sunday joy ride? Long distance travel?

A recent customer Aad (from New Zealand) with his wife and son brought their bikes over from N.Z. to ride from here to Alaska this summer. Their first stop was our shop looking for tires and some extra gear.

It appears they like to travel by bike. We had discussed several trips they took – on their bikes. Europe, Australia and other locales.

We wish them a great trip and look forward to re-supplying them with rubber on their return in 3 months time.

A Clean Bike is…

There are a lot of reasons to keep your motorcycle clean….not only just because it looks nicer.

Probably the prime reason to keep your motorcycle clean & shiny is that a clean bike is a cooler-running bike. Dirt adds a small layer of insulation that retains heat.

Regular cleaning is really part of maintaining your investment. And it’s always a good idea to clean your bike before bringing it in for service. Most mechanics dislike working on a dirty bike because it makes replacing parts and servicing difficult. In some instances a shop will charge extra to clean a dirty motorcycle before the mechanic services it.

The best way is to clean your vehicle more often than not. Cleaning your motorcycle regularly means using less cleaning product, requiring less pressure washing and overall, less time in the process. Be careful with high pressure washing, as this can create premature wear in more delicate areas.  Hand-washing near the steering head and wheel bearings is best.

So it’s not a bad idea to keep your baby clean rather than dirty. It will save you time and money in the long run.

What’s In a Service?

What is in a service? All sorts of different things but we try to break it down and keep it simple for our customers. There are two basic categories; Quick service (oil, tires, brake pads, etc.) and Major service (There are 3 different types and can include a multitude of things)

Quick Service usually involves a flat labour rate for a specific job. Oil & filter, for example, is $35 for the labour plus the cost of oil, the filter and misc. (commonly known as shop supplies). There are exceptions to this depending on the bike. To do a rear tire change on a Honda GL1500 touring bike is more than the normal rate. Why? Well, it takes a lot more time to remove the rear wheel on one of these bike due to the luggage racks and other body parts.

That is why we often ask what type of bike you have so we can accurately quote for any given job.

Major Services are broken down into 3 basic categories  Minor Service, Full Service and Full Service with valve adjustments. These will have a time approximation for labour and always “Plus parts, taxes and any levies” that apply.

A minor service is (on average) is approximately 1.5 hours labour and includes checking and/or replacing oil & filter, cables, steering head bearings, fluids (hydraulic,  coolant), electrical, tires, wheels, brakes, final drive, and other things based on each model of bike. (plus parts, etc)

A full service would include all of the above along with spark plugs, air filter. A full service runs between 2.5-3 hours of labour. It is a complete check over of the motorcycle except for a valve adjustment. (plus parts, etc)

Full service with valves is just that. (plus parts, etc)

So the next time you need work done, think about what is needed and that we way we can accurately and fairly offer the service you need.

Book Review: The Man Who Would Stop at Nothing

I recently stumbled across this book while perusing my local book shop. I seem to be a sucker for almost anything motorcycle related, especially books – or should I say Motorcycle travel stories.

I’ve read most of the published print involving motorcycle travels. Some stand out as enjoyable reads, others are just another log of adventure.

Now I am only half way through “The Man Who…” but I find Ms. Holbrook Pierson’s writing has drawn me in as she describes what most of us riders know and feel but never put into words. She also takes us on a trip that some riders know about but most of us never imagine doing – the long-distance ride. More specifically, the Iron-Butt riders of the US (11,000 mi. in 11 days).

A very intriguing and enjoyable read so far.

Melissa Holbrook Pierson has written other books including a previous motorcycle related story “The Perfect Vehicle: What is it About Motorcycles” which is on my bookshelf waiting to be read.

If you enjoy a good motorcycle tale or just want to know more on that particular subject I would suggest this read. I can’t wait to finish it and get on to her other book.

Alfred Kienleitener is and always will be a motorcycle mechanic.  Now, I know he would give me a grimace and a cynical comment for saying this, but I think he’s a magician.  Or a Zen master.  Or an incarnation of Buddha, which is what I secretly call him. Watching Alfie work on a motorcycle is fun. And interesting. And kind of amazing.  Even when he dons his ancient white helmet and hops on his latest project to test ride his work, the word that comes to mind is “smooth”.  Anyway, if your motorcycle needs a mechanic, bring it into Imperial Motorcycles for a bench session with Alfie.

This Is Your Brain on a Motorcycle

Riding a motorcycle every day might actually keep your brain functioning at peak condition, or so says a study conducted by the University of Tokyo. The study demonstrated that riders between the age of 40 and 50 were shown to improve their levels of cognitive functioning, compared to a control group, after riding their motorcycles daily to their workplace for a mere two months.

Get the Grunge…

…brush and help maintain your motorcycle chain (if you have one).

A must-have to keep your ride shiny. Not everyone thinks about cleaning their chain, but a dirty chain will limit its life. The chain is the critical component to get the power to the rear wheel and is worth the attention.

From my experience, I suggest that you place an old cloth or cardboard along the ground and on the rear wheel before using the Grunge Brush.  This helps prevent the bristles from sending stuff flying. Depending on the type of lube you are using, either a little more of the lube or kerosene will clean it up. Let your chain dry (especially with kerosene) for an hour or so then re-lube according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Save money and enjoy a happy chain life with the Grunge Brush.

Custom LED Brake Light Flasher

I’ve recently installed the CustomLED brake light flasher on my FJR1300. What this unit does is allows you to modulate the brake light flash with 10 different pre-settings (see page bottom).

Installation was straight-forward and includes connectors & zip-ties. It took about 10 minutes to install. On the FJR it was placed under the passenger seat and tapped into the brake at the same spot.

The purpose is to offer greater visibility while braking by getting the drivers’ behind attention. I noticed how well it works as after the install cars were stopping an extra length or two behind me. Good and cheap insurance from possible rear-enders. We have them in stock for $69.95.
